While these numbers are six years old, not much has changed...we'll see what this year's Census says. Don't forget to participate!
• 62% of African American women were employed in the US in 2004, equatin to 12% of the US workforce.
• Of the 62% that were employed, 9% were in decision-making roles such as vice president, chief, and director, 21% were in professional roles, 22% were in office/administrative positions, and 27% were in service occupations.
• Although African American women made up 12% of the US workforce in 2004, they occupied 69% of all service, production, sales, office, and administrative support positions which seems to suggest a low representation of African American women in more senior management and executive roles.
• When one compares the representation of African American women in decision making positions to Caucasian women in 2004, Caucasian women were 10 times more likely than African American women to hold high-status roles.
• 3.5% of African American women made $75,000 a year or more, compared to 8% of Caucasian women and 7% of all women, regardless of race and 13% of the entire US population made $75,000 a year or more compared to African American women’s 3.5%.
