I can't believe it's been five months since writing my last blog entry. Where did the time go? Well, it went to other things like teaching, coaching and consulting, caring for family, serving at church, joining the Women's Commission, preparing for and then entering the holidays and designing a new Women in Leadership Seminar Series that I launched in January 2011! So my new year is starting out with a bang! What about yours?
Yesterday, I attended a women's conference. It was a great day for networking and professional development. For the first time in a longer time than I am proud to even share, I was in a room full of women from a diversity of backgrounds, careers, organizations and cultures. There were breakfast, lunch and closing sessions as well as morning and afternoon breakout sessions. Because I have so often gone to a conference or event that didn't deliver on the hype they promoted, I was a little leery of attending this conference. But it was well worth my $165 investment from the food (gotta have food!) to the speakers but especially, the networking! I'm not sure where the contacts I made will lead but I'm very excited about following the path.
The opening session had three speakers speaking on health and wellness, being a woman that wins and not sweating the small stuff (so we can focus on the big stuff - like family, developing meaningful relationships and growing as leaders). And did you know that heart disease is the #1 killer of women? I did but the talk I heard yesterday motivated me to work out that much harder in the gym this morning to get my heart rate up and get those endorphins going.
The morning breakout session I sat in on taught about the importance of life balance, taking breaks and recharging our batteries. I wish I could have DVR'd it to watch over and over again! I still haven't learned that lesson completely I'm sad to say.
The lunch session reminded me about the little girl within and allowing the woman I have become to take good care of her as well as the little girls coming up behind us. While the speaker noted that we are "emotional creatures" and I believe that to often be true, it is still important to harness those emotions in order to be the powerful women we were designed to be.
The afternoon breakout session was the best! The session I sat in on reminded me about the importance of being financially healthy. I have some work to do! I'm not in a bad place but could definitely do better. What about you?
Finally, I learned about living a life of passion and purpose. Hmmm...sounds familiar! There must be something to it!
I encourage all of you to schedule at least once a year a conference, retreat or seminar just for you to refresh, rejuvenate and renew your mind. Make new friends and contacts and continue advancing as a leader!
